Basic Guide to Take Better Photos of Fish

Today we tell you the most basic tips to take better photos of your fishing catches . We will not go into technical sections of photographs in manual since we are not great specialists in it.

CHECKING PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT

First of all we must check the cameras, tripods and accessories that we want to use in our fishing days. How many times it has happened to us to run out of battery in the middle of the day.

I remember once fishing in a French lake that a huge pike bite me, I took it out, I removed the hook and when I was about to take the required photo…. huala, coletazo and direct to the water. I thought, nothing happens, I have the gopro on my chest, and yes, I had it, but for 10 minutes I hadn’t recorded due to a lack of battery… ..

Without photography, there is no way to show off fish … So the day before, check batteries and memory cards of our equipment.

ACCESSORIES TO TAKE FISHING PHOTOS

KEEP THE FISH IN THE WATER

Sometimes it is a bit complicated, but please do not have a fish out of the water for a long time. Just like you drown in water, he, out of it, too.

HIDE HANDS

Our advice is not to use utensils such as stinger, grips and other tools of the devil that the only thing they do is harm the fish. There are correct ways to correctly catch a fish without hurting us or him.

To what I am going, in the fish photos it is important that the protagonist is the fish, not you. So your hands as hidden as possible.

A good tip is to lift the tail of the fish and leave the head lower. In this way we create a diagonal so that the photo is more dynamic and more attractive. Below we tell you the rule of thirds for this composition.

CREATE A CORRECT COMPOSITION FOR FISH PHOTOS

LEAVE MARGINS , give your photography air, do not cut neither the fish nor the fisherman. Do not mind stopping more, there is always time to cut it.

The rule of thirds, our best ally for correct photography . A good tip is to enable the grid on our phones or cameras, it is helpful. It will help us see which are the points of interest and where to position the fish .

WHAT IS THE RULE OF THE THIRDS?

The rule of thirds is one of the most basic rules of photography , very easy to put into practice and one of the first to learn. It consists of dividing the image into 3 parts creating 4 internal intersection points, either mentally or with the grid. Those are the strong points , if the image has a single point of interest, we have to place it in one of them.

Those 4 marked points are the strong points , in one of them we have to focus the point of interest of our photo , the fish, the lure etc … Sometimes we may also want to have two points of interest, these also have to coincide with the points highlighted.

If the image is vertical, the rule of thirds is exactly the same.

This is the most basic of photographic composition, as you will see nothing technical or difficult. If you want to go deeper, here is everything you need to know about the rule of thirds .

STRAIGHT HORIZON

Please STRAIGHT FISH PICTURES !!!!! . We do nothing if we make a correct composition, we leave margins, a correct light and then we take out the crooked horizon. The horizon always straight and to be able to be in the upper third.

FOCUS TO THE FISH’S EYE

A good way to give the most importance to the fish is this. If we do it with a mobile, just touch the fish’s eye and the camera will automatically focus. If you use a reflex camera I understand that you will know how to do it …

THE IMPORTANCE OF LIGHT TO TAKE PHOTOS OF FISH

Last but not least, light , just look from where the sun is hitting us, position ourselves properly and try not to see the background ( recommended ).

If it hits us on the back, dark photo, if it hits us right in front, the reflection produced by the fish scales may burn the photo.

David uncle, you’re grating me, how do I take the photo then ?

The ideal is to have the light at about 45º incident on one side , of course the side on which the fish is. This is what I consider to be more correct, of course each photo is a world and we will never be able to use these patterns. In addition to this form we will hide the photographer’s shadow

The only way you have to make a good photo is to test, test and test. You will realize that a good photographer does not take good photos because he has a good camera but because he has many factors in mind.
